On forest height retrieval from spaceborne X-band interferometric SAR images under variable seasonal conditions

چکیده
This paper discusses the possibility to use spaceborne X-band radar interferometry for forest height mapping. In our previous works was shown that airborne X-band SAR interferometry combined with accurate ground elevation model can provide good estimates of boreal forest height. In order to apply this technique to spaceborne SAR images, temporal variability of the scattering and lower signal to noise ratio of speceborne images should be taken into acount. In this work, a set of 10 TanDEM-X SAR satellite image pairs, acquired during summer and autumn 2011 over southern Finland, was used to evaluate the potential tree height retrieval performance and temporal stability of the method. The obtained results are compared to our previous studies on tree height retrieval with airborne E-SAR instrument of DLR in the same area. Our results show, that spaceborne TanDEM-X and TerraSAR-X satellite image pairs are suitable for forest height retrieval, but as expected, the accuracy of the method is lower than in the case of airborne measurement. Also the radar signal penetration depth into the forest varies seasonally and this variation should be taken into account when estimating tree height with SAR interferometry.

متن کاملForest Height Estimates for Boreal Forest Using L- and X-band Polinsar and Hutscat Scatterometer
In this paper we present a airborne polarimetric interferometric SAR measurement campaign, carried out in Finland in 2003. The main aim of the FinSAR campaign was to validate POLinSAR tree height retrieval algorithms for boreal forest and it was arranged jointly by Helsinki University of Technology (TKK) and German Aerospace Center (DLR) Microwaves and Radar Institute. During the campaign airbo...
متن کاملEstimation of Biophysical Parameters in Boreal Forests from ERS and JERS SAR Interferometry
Due to their environmental and economic role, boreal forests need frequent and accurate monitoring. Spaceborne SAR imagery covers entire regions, is acquired on a roughly monthly basis and represents a data source for a broad spectrum of applications related to environmental monitoring. In this thesis SAR images and repeat-pass interferometric SAR images acquired during the ERS and JERS mission...
متن کاملInterferometric SAR Coherence Models for Characterization of Hemiboreal Forests Using TanDEM-X Data
In this study, four models describing the interferometric coherence of the forest vegetation layer are proposed and compared with the TanDEM-X data. Our focus is on developing tools for hemiboreal forest height estimation from single-pol interferometric SAR measurements, suitable for wide area forest mapping with limited a priori information. The multi-temporal set of 19 TanDEM-X interferometri...
